We were surprised when Shapiro, a 29-year-old- from Virginia, beat top New Zealand pro Fiona Docherty at the first-ever Philadelphia Triathlon in June. Then Shapiro finished second overall (to Olympic bronze medalist Susan Williams) and was first amateur at the Columbia Triathlon. She capped the season by winning her 25-29 age group – and was fastest overall amateur – at the Honolulu ITU age-group world championships, finishing three minutes ahead of the competition.
